Lucky for some this Friday is the 13th, we thought we would have some fun and look at some lucky and not so lucky superstition.

Black Cat

Depending on culture black cats are seen as good and bad luck. A black cat is seen as a witches familiar and is said to bring bad luck if it crosses your path. The Egyptians believed all cats were goof luck and protected them. It is also said that if you find one pure white hair in an all black cat and can manage to pluck it out without being scratched you will find good luck in love and great wealth.

This cute Thomas Sabo cat charm wont bring you good or bad luck but will look great on your bracelet.

Clover

A four leaf clover is said to be lucky as the leaves represent faith, hope, love and luck.

See more about clover charms in our St Patrick’s day feature.

Horseshoe

Placing a horseshoe over a door brings good luck. Some people say you must always remember to keep the horseshoe the right way up or the luck will run out and others believe that the luck will remain no matter what way the horseshoe is.

Whatever you believe, I’m sure you would feel lucky to own this Thomas Sabo Horseshoe charm.

White Rabbit

Do you remember being told to say white rabbits three times on the first day of each month before talking to bring you good luck?

This Thomas Sabo rabbit pendant is encrusted with cubic zirconia.

New Shoes On Table

Putting new shoes on the table is said to invite death. This may stem from a miners family being informed of their death by placing their shoes on the table.

I’m not sure this Thomas Sabo stiletto charm would fit on my feet but I’d certainly be wearing it on my bracelet.

Bear

It is said that in ancient British superstition it was believed that if a child rides on a bears back it will be protected from whooping-cough.

I don’t fancy riding on a bears back but this Thomas Sabo bear charm is definitely worth a cuddle.

Apple

An Apple a day keeps the doctor away but an apple tempted Eve in the garden of Eden.

Whether you choose to be good or bad this Thomas Sabo apple Pendant would look simply delicious.

Butterflies

If the first butterfly you see in the year is white, you will have good luck all year.

I would love to wear this Thomas Sabo butterfly ring all year round.

Acorn

An acorn at the window will keep lightning out . I’m not sure that this would work if you had the Thomas Sabo acorn charm on your bracelet but you would still look great.

Fish

If you throw back the first fish you catch then you’ll be lucky the whole day fishing.

I wouldn’t want to throw back this fantastic blue enamel Thomas Sabo fish pendant.

Frogs

A frog will bring good luck to the house it enters. Don’t try kissing a frog as it probably wont turn into a prince, just take a look at this Thomas Sabo frog charm instead.

Ladybirds

The deeper the ladybird’s colour, the better luck it brings. The number of spots on its back are also important. The more spots…the better the luck!

Feel summery with this great Thomas Sabo Ladybird charm.

Pigs

One superstition to get rid of warts involves rubbing a peeled apple and giving it to a pig.

This sweet little Thomas Sabo piglet charm would make a great addition to any Thomas Sabo charm holder.

Owls

If an owl looks in your window or if you see one during the bad luck and death will bestow you. This Thomas Sabo owl charm certainly wont bring you bad luck but would certainly be a good look for you Thomas Sabo bracelet.

Dolphins

Dolphins are said to bring good luck to the ship they are following. This sterling silver Thomas Sabo dolphin charm will be able to follow you everywhere you go once placed on your bracelet.

Evil Eye

The evil eye is believed to cause injury or bad luck to the person it is directed at. It is also said to be a good look charm and is worn to protect against evil. We cant guarantee it will bring you good luck but the Thomas Sabo evil eye charm looks great with other blue charms.

Dragons

The Chinese dragon is seen as a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, energy, good fortune, optimism and success. This Thomas Sabo dragon charm doesn’t breathe fire but it certainly looks hot.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is associated with the shamrock plant. Legend states it was used to explain the Holy Trinity, the leaves representing the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Saint Patrick was taken to Ireland as a slave at 16, eventually escaping and becoming a Christian priest and then a Bishop. When he returned to Ireland as a missionary, St Patrick is said to have been responsible for converting many of the Irish people to Christianity.

Though the people of Ireland have been observing the feast of St Patrick on March 17th since the 10th century, the first St Patrick day parade took place in the USA when Irish soldiers marched through New York on March 17th 1762. From then on many Irish immigrants held annual parades in the United States.

The Irish government started a national campaign in 1995 to help drive tourism in Ireland which centred around the celebrations of St Patrick’s day.

We cant wait to celebrate and have put together a great collection of St Patrick’s day and Irish themed jewellery that would be perfect for the parade through Dublin city centre on March 17th.

Nomination Classic Ireland Flag Charm

It is said many people believe that the green of the Irish flag represents their Gaelic history, the orange symbolises followers of William of Orange within Ireland and the white centre of the flag stands for the truce between them.

4 Leaf Clover Charms & Jewellery

How lucky would you be to find a four leaf clover? OK, so this jewellery range may last a little longer but there are many great designs available from Thomas Sabo, Chamilia, Nomination and Trolbeads. The reason for the four leaf clover is said to be lucky is that the 4 leaves are symbolic of faith, hope, love and luck.

Nomination Leprechaun Charms

Leprechauns are Irish fairies and though very mischievous, they can also bring you luck (if you manage to catch one.) Normally dressed in a green suit, it is rumoured that each leprechaun has a pot of gold hidden at the end of a rainbow. These Nomination Leprechaun charms may not lead you to their pot of gold but you would certainly be lucky to have one on your bracelet.

Chamilia Shamrock Bead

The Shamrock has long been a symbol of Ireland and Saint Patrick. Many Irish companies and sporting teams display the shamrock within their products and clothing. The Chamilia shamrock bead is a perfect addition to any Chamilia bracelet to celebrate St Patrick’s day.

 Nomination Classic Irish Tankard Charm

This Nomination Irish tankard charm is full of Irish stout. Guinness is traditionally drunk on St Patrick’s day. Why not make a toast to Saint Patrick and add this charm to your bracelet.

Of course if you are looking for something green to match your St Patrick’s day outfit then we have a wider selection of jewellery and watches available from top brands including: Tresor Paris, Ice-Watch, Diesel, Radley and Coeur de Lion.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

You may remember the fantastic competition we ran in the build up to Christmas to win a brand new Fiat 500. The first competition of its kind run by the Joshua James group had thousands of entries both from the Joshua James Jewellery and Watch Depot web sites from as far afield as, Paris, Berlin and New York. Our lucky winner was picked and came down to our store in Hessle, East Yorkshire to collect their Prize.

Mother of two, Jen Davies from Chapel Allerton, West Yorkshire was absolutely thrilled when she received the call to tell her she had won the brand new car. Jen was automatically entered into the competition when her husband purchased a charm bracelet from the Joshua James Jewellery site before Christmas.

Jen’s current car, a Renault Clio Campus is over 6 years old, said the new car couldn’t have come at a better time:

“The Renault has been such an unlucky car. It’s been stolen, badly vandalised, I’ve lost a wing mirror, and there is a part missing, which is, apparently, irreplaceable!”

“Now it seems my luck has changed dramatically. I’ve never won anything before, and to win a Fiat 500 is incredible, I’m so pleased. “

“I’ll have to look for a matching car charm now to add to my bracelet!”

Shaun Bell, Managing Director of Joshua James Jewellery, was very happy with the outcome of the competition:

“I’m thrilled for Jen and her family. I’m really pleased that the car is going somewhere it will be truly appreciated.”
